Never Let Me Go

faber and faber  | 2006  | ANGOL nyelvű  | PUHATÁBLÁS, RAGASZTÓKÖTÖTT  |  282 oldal

In one of the most acclaimed and original novels of recent years, Kazuo Ishiguro imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a darkly skewered version of contemporary England. Narrated by Kathy, now thirty-one, Never Let Me Go hauntingly dramatises her attempts to come to terms with her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School, and with the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends in the wider world.A story of love, friendship and memory, Never Let Me Go is charged throughout with a sense of the fragility of life.

Never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro is a heart-breaking book which brings up serious moral questions. Its major topic is cloning, and it raises the question, do they count as any other man and woman or are they something less? In Kazous novel, clones are living a fairly normal life, they all go to Hailsham, an elite boarding school, where they are raised to be healthy, but when someone among the normal people needs a donor, one of them will be that, and they have no other choice. They have to give away all their organs. Our protagonist is Kathy, also the narrator, who is a clone. We see periods of Kathys life through her memories, how she explores life, feelings, her friendship with Tommy and Ruth, how they separated somewhere along the road, and how she understands their role in the outside world. Ishiguros writing style is excellent, he slowly gives us the details, always leaving us a little mystery on the way. The language is simple and the tone stays calm, but still the book conveys deep emotions and images for the reader. This book is really depressing, but worth every single page and leaves us thinking about loss, morality, mortality. The book doesnt answer these questions, we have to find them in ourselves.
