The story is set in Dorchester, a tough neighborhood in Boston. Private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro are hired by a woman to find her four-year-old niece, Amanda McCready, who has vanished from her home. Amanda's mother, Helene, is a neglectful drug addict and mule for a local drug lord, which makes the case much darker than a simple kidnapping. As Patrick and Angie dig deeper, they collaborate with two police detectives and the head of the Crimes Against Children unit, Jack Doyle. The search leads them through a gritty underworld of pedophiles, drug dealers, and corrupt systems. They eventually discover that the "kidnapping" was an orchestrated attempt by people close to the case to save Amanda from her mother's toxic lifestyle.
