Lord of the Flies

Since it was first published in 1954, William Golding's classic debut novel has remained a stark allegory of civilization, survival, and human nature. As dystopian stories like Hunger Games and Battle Royale surge in popularity, this haunting tale of a group of young boys stranded on a desert island still captivates schoolchildren around the world, raising timeless and profound questions about how easily society can slip into chaos and savagery when rules and order have been abandoned. When a plane crashes on a remote island, a small group of schoolboys are the sole survivors. From the prophetic Simon and virtuous Ralph to the lovable Piggy and brutish Jack, each of the boys attempts to establish control as the reality- and brutal savagery-of their situation sets in.A teacher himself, Golding clearly understood how to interest children with a gripping story and strong, sympathetic characters. The novel serves as a catalyst for thought-provoking discussion and analysis of universal issues, not only concerning the capabilities of humans for good and evil and the fragility of moral inhibition, but beyond. The boys' struggle to find a way of existing in a community with no fixed boundaries invites readers to evaluate the concepts involved in social and political constructs and moral frameworks. Symbolism is strong throughout, revealing both the boys' capacity for empathy and hope, as well as illuminating the darkest corners of the human spirit. Ideas of community, leadership, and the rule of law are called into question as the reader has to consider who has a right to power, why, and what the consequences of the acquisition of power may be. Often compared to Catcher in the Rye, Lord of the Flies also represents a coming-of-age story of innocence lost.

The Lord of The Flies is a great book from two angles. It is an exciting adventure story, that will entertain you and make you look forward for more, and it also raises deep questions about morality. The introduction of the story already makes you interested in the characters and in the whole plot. A bunch of school boys get stranded on an island. There are no adults there, so they can experience real freedom for the first time of their life. They realize that they need a leader, so they all could have fun equally. This is where the conflict starts. Ralph and Jack are the two candidates and they are the exact opposite of each other. Ralph represents kindness and democracy, while Jack is savage and a totalitarian leader. The boys are experiencing all kinds of adventures, like fights, hunting and exploration of the island, so while reading, you will never get bored. The way they interact with each other (mainly in the beginning of the book), how they are trying to create a system is very interesting. The book also has a deeper meaning. It shows us the dark side of savagery, lack of morality and the need for good leaders. The boys are turning against each other, they are fighting in a literary sense, and they even kill each other. They became savages, they act like animals without adults and they do not have a moral compass, murdering each other seemed natural to them. At the end of the story, after the biggest battle, a soldier appears. The story stops there, but we can imagine how the man put an end to their "role play". One message of the book could be that without the right guidance and strong leaders, we would all turn into savages, just like the boys. The soldier at the end symbolizes the good side of authority. I would recommend this to both kids and adults, for people who would like to read a great adventure story and for people who are looking for a deeper meaning (criticism of society). You will have a great time while learning about something important.
